How to use FTP - Transferring Your Site to Powerful Hosting
The process by which files are transferred to the web server is called "FTP" (File
Transport Protocol). You have unlimited access via FTP 24-hours a day. As such,
you can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files
to your web site at your leisure.
Note: If you have trouble logging in via FTP your account may be locked down for security.
With new accounts shell and FTP access are disabled until a Powerful Hosting customer service rep can
verify the legitamacy of the account. Also, your account may be disabled if our security experts suspect
that some one is using your account without your authorization. If you are able to log into your iCenter
or webmail but are unable to login via the same user name and password to ftp your account has probably been
disabled. Please contact our customer support staff at 888-486-4533.
Warning - Microsoft FrontPage Users:
Customers with Microsoft FrontPage extensions installed on their sites should use
only the FrontPage publishing feature to transfer files.
Internet providers such as AOL, Compuserve, and Prodigy may have a built-in FTP interface. If you
need an FTP program, you can download software
for for either the PC or Mac below. PC users should download
WinZip if you do not already have
a program to extract .zip files.
Now that you've decided you'd like to transfer your site to Powerful Hosting, it's a simple process to get your site up and running. If you follow the simple step-by-step procedure below, it will only take a few minutes.
Your website consists of a group of files that contain the instructions that web browsers need to display the your site's information when someone clicks on your web address (your "URL"). The files that contain the actual web page information are most often .htm .html files although there may be variations like .shtml, .asp, or .xml. Depending on the complexity of your site, you may have other collateral files that contain information needed to make things work, like .cgi or .css files. If you have graphics or photos on your site (almost all sites do) you will also have image files ending in .jpg, .gif. or .png. These are often found in a separate "images" directory on your old server. All the relevant files must be copied and sent to the Powerful Hosting servers - in the right place (directory).
When you chose a username and password and signed up for your new hosting account, space (a directory) on the Powerful Hosting servers was created to allow you to upload your website files. This directory can be found at http://ftp.powerfulhosting.com on the internet.
Once your FTP client is set up, you're ready to transfer your files.
Step 1
Open FTP Explorer. Go to the "Tools" menu and click on "Connect"

Now, tell FTP Explorer where to put the files on Powerful Hostings's servers for your website. The screen should look like this when you're done:

After you've typed in the information, click on "Save", then click on "Connect" and you will be connected to the Powerful Hosting server where your website files belong. You should see a screen like this:

Step 2 Click on the "www" directory. From the "File" menu, choose "Upload".

This will open a window that will allow you to browse the hard drive on your computer.
Step 3

Select the .html or .htm files, images (.jpg, .gif or .png), and any
other files associated with your website like Flash animations and
CGI files. NOTE If your site uses CGI files please see the
CGI HOWTO for information on setting up CGI files. If your site uses Real Audio or Video streaming, see the Real Media Streaming Guide for information on setting up those files.
